Gone are the days when flashcards were paper-based, and teachers had to print or buy them before students could use them.
As classrooms go digital, paperless initiatives follow, including digital flashcards. Pair them with AI and you’re not just creating digital. You’re creating them fast, smart, and built for student-paced learning outside the classroom.
We’ve had the pleasure of hosting a hands-on workshop on how to create Edcafe AI flashcards, attended by hundreds of eager educators who want AI to work actively with them in the classroom.
And in this blog, we’re showing just as much detail as in the webinar, so you can bookmark it for later and follow the steps with ease.

Step 1: Set up your input source
As with any content you create in Edcafe AI, the first step is to set your input. This is the base where your flashcards will be generated from.

Edcafe AI gives you several options to create flashcards:
- Topic: Enter any subject you’d like to generate flashcards from.
- Text: Paste in existing text from any source.
- Webpage: Use online resources directly.
- Existing files: Repurpose documents you already have.
Step 2: Select a flashcards template
When you create Edcafe AI flashcards, the process is guided step by step. No need to start from scratch or spend extra time setting things up manually.
Once your input source is ready, you can choose from a variety of ready-made templates. Each one comes with built-in prompts, so you don’t have to engineer them yourself:
- Term and Definition: Great for subjects heavy on terminology.
- Question and Answer: Supports comprehension and recall.
- Vocabulary Cards: Strengthens word knowledge and context.
- True or False: Quick checks for understanding—perfect for quizzes and reviews.
- Fill in the Blank: Encourages active recall by completing key statements.
- Custom: A flexible option if you want to design your own style.

All templates (except Custom) come with smart pre-set prompts for the front and back of each card. Everything is fully editable, so you can adjust as needed, but the guided setup ensures the process stays simple and worry-free.
Step 3: Customize further
After steps 1 and 2, your Edcafe AI flashcards can be customized with more options.
You can set how many cards you want in the set, align your content to a specific student level, and choose an output language for multilingual classes.

You can also automatically attach images to the front or back of each card. When enabled, your flashcards include relevant visuals to make them more engaging and student-friendly.
Step 4: Generate and adjust
Once everything is set, click Generate.
After generation, you’ll see each card’s contents: what appears on the front and back, and any attached images.

You can refine images by:
- Searching the web with new keywords
- Creating AI images from text
- Uploading images from your device
Tip: Edcafe AI flashcards work with voice agents, so you can attach audio for read-alouds. When you assign the set to students (next step), they can play the audio while they study.
Step 5: Save and assign to your students
Once you’re happy with your Edcafe AI flashcards, save them to Edcafe AI’s built-in library.
From there, you can send your flashcard set directly to students using the Assign feature. This generates a QR code that students can scan to access and review your flashcards anytime, on any device.

Students also get built-in study options such as:
- Shuffle cards
- Swap front and back
- Track progress with a built-in tracker
- Restart the set anytime
Step 6: Export and other options
You also have the flexibility to export your flashcards into different formats, including PowerPoint, Google Docs, or PDF.
Need a multilingual version? Use the Translate option to convert your entire set into another language instantly.
Another powerful feature is Share. While Assign is built for students, Share is designed for co-educators. It lets them clone your Edcafe AI flashcards, or any other Edcafe AI content you create, so they can use it as a ready-made template.

Explore User-Generated Edcafe AI Flashcards
We’ve set up an open Padlet board where educators can post and share their own Edcafe AI flashcards. It’s a growing library of ideas you can browse for inspiration or add to with your own sets.

To contribute, simply copy the Share link from your Edcafe AI flashcards and drop it onto the Padlet board. Your flashcards instantly become part of a collaborative resource other teachers can learn from.
